Instructor Highlight :: Shawn Stratmann

When I think about all of the dreamy classes being offered at Lucky Star, the one that I think best represents what Lucky Star is all about is Shawn Stratmann‘s class, “Dreambook“.  It’s about DIGging DEEP to find that BiG DrEAm, CONNECTing to what really works for you, and using your creativity and a well thought out plan to ReACH for the StARs!

I met Shawn at camp a few years ago and we literally laughed until we dang near peed our pants one night in front of the fireplace with the rest of our cabin mates.  REally!  She is one of the most creative, hard-working, dedicated, talented, multi-tasking, dynamo artful mamas I have ever met or even heard of.  Her class will be awesome and… LuCKy us…not only is she teaching a class, she is also our Friday night keynote speaker!  I’d love for you to check out her amazing class, but you have to sign-up before September 30th!  I also invite you to get to know Shawn a bit more by reading her interview below.  And then…if you’re lucky, you could win Shawn’s Favorite Art Supplies Giveaway.  Don’t miss out!

Do you have any nicknames?

Not really.  My husband calls me Shawnee sometimes.  When I was younger my step dad called me  “Mini”, he called my Mom “the queen”….in other words, I was known as the “mini” queen.  On the flip side though, I am a huge nick-namer…my children are rarely called by their birth names by me.

Do you have any pets?

A menagerie.  2 dogs, 2 cats, 17 chickens, 1 hamster, 6 fish. 1 hermit crabs.

What has been your biggest adventure to date?

Creating extraordinary memories with the kids, traveling both near and far, cooking and eating a new meal, living and working creatively, being a forever student of life, working to make a difference in the lives of the children I work with, not following the “what I should” do rules…all make my life feel like one big adventure.

Did you go to summer camp as a kid?

One year I went to a camp in Colorado Springs for a couple of weeks.  It  was a magical experience and I still remember so many details about being there.  One of my favorites memories was that in order to pass the swim test I had to swim the length of the swim area with a match in your mouth.  You couldn’t pass the test unless you could light the match.  Sitting on the dock, striking, and lighting, that match was one of my 1st memorable accomplishments.

Salty or Sweet?

BOTH!!!  Always BOTH!! Chocolate and peanut butter…pretzels dipped in chocolate…  caramels with Salt…yummy!

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I don’t remember.  But I had a hard time choosing my path in college.  I graduated with a degree in Literature, minor in Journalism, one class shy of two additional minors (economics and government and Politics).  If you personally know me, you can see this makes perfect sense, however, it also shows you that I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Tell us about a time when you were really brave.

I am very good in situations that could be seen as traumatic or scary.  On more than one occasion (unfortunately) I have been first on the scene at an accident and I am not afraid to get in there to help where needed.  I get weirdly calm and clear in those moments.

What is your dream for your golden years?

To never stop making, dreaming, traveling, writing, doing, inspiring.  I think my most productive years will be my “golden years”.

Outside or inside?

Both.  I love home and I love creative spaces but I also love the outdoors.

Who inspires you?

So many people.  The people I learn the most from are those who follow their passions, love their process, have something original to say, and make up their own rules.   Artists.

List three scents that take you back to another time.

Fresh cut grass, smell of lake in Maine,  coppertone sunscreen in the brown bottle.

What do you do to relax?

Anything related to making art.  I lose myself.

What kind of music are you playing lately?

Jason Mraz, John Mayer, David Grey, Classical.

What is your favorite time of day?

List your three favorite books.

Fiction:  Bel Canto–Ann Patchett, Stones from the River by Ursula Heigi, A Prayer for Owen Meany, John Iriving.

Non Fiction:  Living a Beautiful Life, Alexandra Stoddard, 4-Hour work week, Tim Ferriss, Teaching your Children Values, Linda & Richard Eyre.

Do you have a favorite daily ritual or practice?

Waking my girls up in the morning.  Cooking and eating meals with my family.

Do you have a tattoo?  What is it and why did you choose it?

Do you like to cook?

Love to Cook! Hate to bake.

What is your idea of the perfect meal?

Any meal with a full table of friends and family.

What’s your favorite season?

Early Fall.

River, ocean, pool or lake?

What are your three favorite sounds?

My girls laughing, my dad playing music (he plays 13 instruments), birds singing in the morning.  the crescendo of the crickets in August .

Girl Guitar!

I have a big announcement to make!  Get ready…this is really exciting.  I just confirmed that Mandy Rowden of  Girl Guitar Austin will be joining us for the week at Lucky Star Art Camp as our musical entertainment!!!  She is super-talented, energetic, and very creative.  She will not only be performing on stage and leading sing-alongs around the campfire, but she will be teaching anyone who has ever wanted to learn how to play the guitar a few chords so they can strum along to a song or two before they leave camp!  There will be tambourines, shakers, and plenty of opportunity to join in the music-making fun!  It just keeps getting better and better, people!

If you live in the Austin area and would like to take music lessons or just catch one of her gigs, look her up!
