Do you have any nicknames?

Not really.  My husband calls me Shawnee sometimes.  When I was younger my step dad called me  “Mini”, he called my Mom “the queen”….in other words, I was known as the “mini” queen.  On the flip side though, I am a huge nick-namer…my children are rarely called by their birth names by me.

Do you have any pets?

A menagerie.  2 dogs, 2 cats, 17 chickens, 1 hamster, 6 fish. 1 hermit crabs.

What has been your biggest adventure to date?

Creating extraordinary memories with the kids, traveling both near and far, cooking and eating a new meal, living and working creatively, being a forever student of life, working to make a difference in the lives of the children I work with, not following the “what I should” do rules…all make my life feel like one big adventure.

Did you go to summer camp as a kid?

One year I went to a camp in Colorado Springs for a couple of weeks.  It  was a magical experience and I still remember so many details about being there.  One of my favorites memories was that in order to pass the swim test I had to swim the length of the swim area with a match in your mouth.  You couldn’t pass the test unless you could light the match.  Sitting on the dock, striking, and lighting, that match was one of my 1st memorable accomplishments.

Salty or Sweet?

BOTH!!!  Always BOTH!! Chocolate and peanut butter…pretzels dipped in chocolate…  caramels with Salt…yummy!

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I don’t remember.  But I had a hard time choosing my path in college.  I graduated with a degree in Literature, minor in Journalism, one class shy of two additional minors (economics and government and Politics).  If you personally know me, you can see this makes perfect sense, however, it also shows you that I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Tell us about a time when you were really brave.

I am very good in situations that could be seen as traumatic or scary.  On more than one occasion (unfortunately) I have been first on the scene at an accident and I am not afraid to get in there to help where needed.  I get weirdly calm and clear in those moments.

What is your dream for your golden years?

To never stop making, dreaming, traveling, writing, doing, inspiring.  I think my most productive years will be my “golden years”.

Outside or inside?

Both.  I love home and I love creative spaces but I also love the outdoors.

Who inspires you?

So many people.  The people I learn the most from are those who follow their passions, love their process, have something original to say, and make up their own rules.   Artists.

List three scents that take you back to another time.

Fresh cut grass, smell of lake in Maine,  coppertone sunscreen in the brown bottle.

What do you do to relax?

Anything related to making art.  I lose myself.

What is your favorite time of day?

Having trouble choosing which classes to take?

I often get emails from women fretting over which classes to take and even one recently where a woman worried that there was nothing being offered that she didn’t already do at home, and she couldn’t see where she would be learning anything new by taking any of the classes being offered.  I know that each of you are spending a lot of money and taking time away from your family so it is very important to you to choose  just the right thing.  I am here to help you do that.  Here are some of my thoughts on classes and how I feel they fit into the “camp” experience, just in case you are out there right now pulling your hair out trying to decide which classes to sign up for!  This is just food for thought. Hopefully it will help:)

How often do you get to do what you love to do while on vacation? While connecting with other women?  While not cooking or cleaning? While swimming in a river and singing around a campfire under the stars?  It has been my experience, and I have attended a camp like this for the past three years, that what you get from the classes you take is only about 20% of the whole experience.  I took a food styling class, yet I already knew how to use a camera and style food.  She made me better.  I took a sewing class, yet I already knew how to sew.  The girl who sat next to me for the day is now a friend I’ll keep in touch with for the rest of my life.  One of my favorite people in the entire world exists in my life now because I met her at camp.  We never had a single class together.  Just happened to cross paths one day outside of the dining hall and she had the guts to say, “Hey, you’re from Texas?  So are we!”  We spent the rest of the evening sitting on a pier on a lake laughing and forging new friendships.  Just the act of deciding that I needed to do this for myself… taking the time away from my family, making the journey alone across the country and showing up for my SELF was worth more than any class ever could have offered.
Do you write? Do you make cheese?  Have you ever spent time with an intuitive?  Have you ever spent the day painting with Juliette Crane?  Dancing and playing with paint and glue in Corrine Gilman’s class?  Or sewing with Cal Patch?  Or goal setting with Shawn Strattman?  How many photographs do you have of yourself that you truly love…photographs that reveal your light shining from within?  How often do you do yoga on the banks of a river?
I dare you to take another look at the classes and see if you can’t find something that would bring you joy, rekindle something lost, spark something altogether different.  Try not to focus so much on the class itself, but the experience instead.
If you still can’t find something, well…dang!
