Jennifer Mercede

Originally from the East Coast, and now living in Portland, Oregon, Jennifer Mercede’s primarily abstract paintings consist of free flow text, bright color fields, and energetic doodling. She is inspired by funky color combinations, children’s art, graffiti and abstract expressionism. Her process is spontaneous and expressive. To quote Mercede, “I paint fast. I doodle. I paint stream of consciously. For me there is no such thing as a mistake, in art, or in life!’

Jennifer likes to create and be free in all kinds of mediums, including music, writing, performing and in her classes you will get a taste of all these flavors!

Lucky Star Classes:  Beloved Florals & Creatures, Play: Color, Paint & Mark Making,  and Wild Wordings

: : : : : Beloved Florals & Creatures : : : : :

Class Description:

Create beautiful floral and animal drawings doodled and painted in. A big part of drawing is looking at the object you are drawing. In this class, you will have an opportunity to develop your drawing skills as well as relax, let go & be free. We will spend time in what I call the ‘BC Zone’ or doing blind contour drawings. Our subject will be flowers or pictures of your favorite animal, though you are welcome to draw whatever inspires you. We will explore mindless scribbling & doodling. (What does your doodle voice look like?) By letting go of the final outcome, you will develop your ability to experiment & grow as an artist.  A small bit of color instruction provided as well.

Class Offered: Half day [Friday PM or Saturday AM]

Materials List for Students:

  • Sketchbook or paper to draw on.
  • At least 4 colors of acrylic paint (any brand is good)

  • Any pens / markers / crayons / colored pencils you enjoy using

: : : : : Let’s Play: Color, Paint & Mark Making : : : : :

Class Description:

In this expressive painting & drawing class, we will begin with mark making exercises to get you creating outside the box. Through various guided activities, we will practice letting go of the outcome. Learn to be expressive with your strokes. Experiment and let your intuition guide your artistic choices as we create abstract paintings on wood in a safe, encouraging environment.  In this class you have permission to play.

What to expect:

Expressive scribbling
Mark making on wood
Blind contour drawing
Color exploration
To get messy, let go & have fun!
Surprise bonus creative experiences!

Class Offered: Half day [Thursday only]

Materials List for Students:  No need to have EVERYTHING on this list. Please bring what you have (no need to run out to the store and buy all new stuff!) I encourage sharing materials in my class. I will be bringing some of mine to share. While it is definitely not expected, it is fun to provide the opportunity for others to try something new. You might just have that something new for someone else!

  • At least 6–8 colors of acrylic paint (any brand).
  • Paintbrushes in a variety of sizes
  • Colored pencils and/or markers
  • Scraping tool (like a palette knife or old credit card)
  • Painting clothes/smock
  • rags
  • Cheap medium sized sketchbook (We will be making many quick drawings & journaling throughout the day. If you have an old and cheap sketchbook, that would be best. A handful of computer paper will work just as well.)

OPTIONAL LIST:  If you have ‘em and you feel like bringing ‘em, go for it!
Stick/toothpicks/kabab stick
Painters tape
Watercolor crayons
Additional surfaces to paint on (canvas/ wood/ paper)

Kit or Supply Fee:  $15

How to Pay for Kit/Supply Fee: In advance via PayPal to or in person during class

Included in Kit:  a couple of wood surfaces to paint on, a few of my favorite drawing tools, and newsprint

Please note:  I work and teach very organically, so be prepared to go with the flow! Also, my classes focus on process. While you may walk away with a piece of art ready to hang on your wall, you may also walk away with a few pieces started & ready to inspire many more hours of creating.

Let’s be wild with words. Let’s be weird with words. Let’s let the words flow and create creative wildings on paper. Poems. Short stories. Let your mind drip from your brain onto the paper. Let’s have fun catching the drops.
