Live Figure Drawing

In this process-based class, we will work with a live model to learn about how to capture the model’s gestures, movement, and proportion to create sketches to be used for future reference. We’ll also work on blocking in shadow, as well as practice basic anatomy. Charcoal and large newsprint paper will be provided for the students to work with, but you’re encouraged to bring your own preferred materials such as ink and paint to work with if you’d like. Students can also bring their own sketchbook paper.


We’ll start with a few short poses (30 seconds) gradually increasing the time to longer poses, and finishing with a one-hour-long pose. I will keep track of the model’s time as well as give out basic instruction. All levels and abilities are welcome. I am happy to give notes or feedback on your work when asked.


Etiquette: Model will be covered at the beginning of class. Phones out only while model is clothed. No photos, and no comments on model. Students are free to check out others’ work during session breaks or you can opt out of this by covering your work during breaks.
