Linens to Landscape
Turn ordinary fabric into extraordinary art in this immersive textile collage workshop. In Linens to Landscape, participants will begin with a printed photo on fabric and transform it into a richly layered landscape scene. Using a mix of vintage and contemporary fabrics, found ephemera, and simple embroidery stitches, you’ll learn how to build depth, texture, and atmosphere in your composition.
Whether you’re drawn to soft linens, bold patterns, or delicate threadwork, this class encourages playful experimentation with color, texture, and storytelling. We will create a 12×12 collage that celebrates our time at Camp Waldemar and Lucky Star 2025! By the end, you’ll walk away with a one-of-a-kind textile collage that blends photography, fabric, and hand-stitching into a personal landscape.
All skill levels are welcome—no sewing experience required. Just bring your curiosity, creativity, and a pair of scissors! A kit will be provided with all your materials, as well as a mounting board so you can frame your creation later.
Kit Fee Includes
- The kit contains white cotton background fabric (10x10), batting, Hot Fix, a postcard sized printed image (printed onto inkjet cotton) of Camp Waldemar, and a selection of landscape colored fabric strips and paper ephemera to be cut and collaged, as demonstrated in class. The kit also contains a selection of 6-stranded embroidery threads, an embroidery needle, a beginner’s guide to basic embroidery stitches, and a couple of buttons or extras for decoration or embellishment. A glue stick and a 12x12 inch backer board for mounting the finished piece for framing will also be included. The bag that contains your kit should be used to carry the finished art piece home. I use a lot of reclaimed and vintage fabrics and materials so some fabrics may vary to those photographed, but be assured you will still have a good selection of fabric and collage fodder!! You will need to bring a good pair of scissors that can be used for cutting both fabric and paper.
Supplies to Bring from Home
- Students need to bring a good pair of scissors that can be used for cutting both fabric and paper. My favorite scissors for this kind of project are Karen Kay Buckley Perfect Scissors (6” or 7.5”) but no specific brand or type is required.
