Class Descripton
Preserve memory and meaning through the language of fabric in this heartfelt textile collage workshop. In Echoes in Cloth, participants will begin with a vintage photo of a special person—whether a family member, ancestor, or found image—and transform it into a layered work of art. Using fabrics, lace, trims, papers, and simple embroidery stitches, you’ll frame and surround your photo with textures that evoke story, memory, and connection.
This workshop is about honoring personal history while embracing creative play. By layering cloth and thread, participants will create a tactile tribute that blends image and textile into a deeply expressive keepsake.
All skill levels are welcome—no sewing experience required. Choose a photo that resonates with you, and let fabric and thread carry its story forward. A kit will be provided with the materials needed to create your art piece, as well as an 11×14 mounting board so you can frame and display later. Bring your creativity, your memories and a pair of scissors!
Kit Fee Includes
- The kit contains white cotton background fabric (10x13), batting, Hot Fix, a postcard sized printed image (printed onto inkjet cotton) of your chosen image, and a selection of fabric strips and paper ephemera to be cut and collaged, as demonstrated in class. The kit also contains a selection of 6-stranded embroidery threads, an embroidery needle, a beginner’s guide to basic embroidery stitches, and a couple of buttons or extras for decoration or embellishment. A glue stick and a 11x14 inch backer board for mounting the finished piece for framing will also be included. The bag that contains your kit should be used to carry your project home. I use a lot of reclaimed and vintage fabrics and materials so some fabrics may vary to those photographed, but be assured you will still have a good selection of fabric and collage fodder!! You will need to bring a good pair of scissors that can be used for cutting both fabric and paper. You may also bring any special small items such as fabrics, scraps, ephemera, buttons, doilies etc. that you’d like to use in your project to commemorate your special person or help tell the story.
Supplies to Bring from Home
- Students need to bring a good pair of scissors for cutting fabric and cloth. I like Karen Kay Buckley 6” or 7.5” scissors for this project but any scissors will do
