Leslie Gaworecki

Leslie Gaworecki is a photographer turned abstract artist based in Houston, Texas.   Leslie received a BFA in photography from The Ohio State University and spent the next 15 years photographing people and events across the country and teaching herself to paint. She began showing paintings in Houston in 2016 in her studio at Houston’s Sawyer Yards.  Her paintings are now exhibited around Texas and collected internationally.

Leslie’s painting practice is driven by color and the surprises that happen when she releases expectation (a lesson she is still trying to learn about life).  Leslie lives with her husband and four sons who inspire her mark-making and her tendency toward whimsy.  Lucky Star is her favorite place.

Lucky Star Classes:  Abstract Landscapes and Happy Hearts

: : : Abstract Landscapes : : :

Class Description:

In this painting class we will work from a photograph or memory of your favorite place to create an abstract painting.  We will all paint places.  Those places could be cities or countryside, your backyard, or your grandmother’s kitchen.  They could be places from the past or something you dream for the future.  Using a photo or a mental image for reference, I’ll show you how I focus on color, shape, and emotion to create abstract paintings with meaning.  Some finished paintings will be recognizable as landscapes, some will simply be shapes and color fields.  I’ll encourage you to let the process lead, and paint for the joy of it.

Class Offered: Half Day

Level of Difficulty: All Levels Welcome

Prerequisites:  None

Materials List for Students:

  • Photos or mental pictures of the place you’d like to paint.  For example, I love to paint a lake my family visits in New York.  Your place can be anywhere.  Photos on your phone are fine, they are just for reference.
  • Canvas – Bring one stretched canvas in your choice of size.  Consider your landscape and if it will best fit a vertical, horizontal, or square canvas.  Choose a size you feel comfortable with or excited about.  Any depth you like is fine.  If you are unsure, something in the 18×24 to 24×36 range is great.  I like these canvases.

If you are flying and want to bring small canvases that fit in your suitcase, that’s okay with me.  Consider bringing two in case you finish the first one.

  • Brushes – A few paintbrushes in different sizes – super cheap paint brushes like kid’s craft brushes are okay!
  • Paint – Heavy body and/or fluid acrylic paints in several colors you get excited about!  Select just a few colors to bring with you – realistic colors from your landscape OR choose fantasy colors at the art supply store.  Abstract landscapes do not have to be true to the colors in the photo. Unlike brushes, I do think expensive paints give better results.  You’ll have more vibrant paintings if you use paints full of pigment. (I love Golden paints: heavy body acrylic paints and fluid acrylics the most)  If these are too spendy, I understand!  Bring what you have and I’ll have some others for you to try in class.
  • Optional: Paint clothes – an apron or shirt that can get messy
  • Optional: Gloves – If you do not like to get paint on your hands

*Do not stress about supplies.  Get what you can, there is always plenty to share.

Supply Fee: $5

The supply fee covers items I will provide – scratch paper, plates to use for palettes, foam brushes, mark making tools like pastels, paper towels, baby wipes, extra paint colors to try.

: : : Happy Hearts : : :

Class Description:

This is a fun painting and mixed media class based on one of my favorite projects.  We will layer paint, pastel, pen, pencil to create a loose, free abstract painting.  Then use heavy bodied white paint to mask out a heart shape.  These paintings make everyone smile!

Class Offered: Half Day

Level of Difficulty: All Levels Welcome

Prerequisites:  None

Materials List for Students:

  • Wood panel – choose a size you like, any depth is fine.  8×8, 10×10, 12×12 are my favorites.  Rectangles like 8×10 work too for longer skinny hearts.  I like these wood panels
  • 3-4 paint colors you love that work well together.  Small bottles are fine if you are buying just for this class. Any brand works.
  • You can make 2 hearts at the same time.  Feel free to bring an extra wood panel if you’d like, but it is not required.
  • Mark makers – pencils, pens, pastels, etc.  – don’t buy anything for this, bring what you have and I will have some to share!
  • Optional: Paint clothes – an apron or shirt that can get messy
  • Optional: Gloves – If you do not like to get paint on your hands

Supply Fee: $5

The supply fee covers items I will provide – Golden titanium white paint, scratch paper, plates to use for palettes, foam brushes, extra mark making tools and paint colors, paper towels, baby wipes.
